ZAMAK DIE-CASTING

A Brief History of Zamak Alloys

Zamak alloys have been developed in 1929 by New Jersey Zinc Company.

The name ZAMAK consists of the German initials of the elements included in the alloy, i.e.: Z (Zinc), A (Aluminum), MA (Magnesium), K (Kupfer - copper). In the early thirties, in the UK Morris Ashby purchased the license to produce ZAMAK alloy from New Jersey Zinc Company. Extremely pure zinc that was needed for this alloy was not available in Europe; therefore, Morris Ashby obtained the right to produce this alloy by using locally produced zinc by means of an electrolytic refining process. The resulting zinc was 99.99% pure.
